One of Toronto’s busiest streetcars will be replaced by shuttle buses for almost two years starting this summer, though it’s not clear how much of the route will be affected.
board meeting on Tuesday, transit officials say the 501 Queen will be replaced by shuttle bus service starting in early May due to delays in the construction necessary to divert the streetcars around the building of the new Ontario Line station at Queen and Yonge Streets. That streetcar detour will eventually run along Adelaide and Richmond from Church to York Streets.“We haven’t finalized the plan yet,” Stuart Green, TTC senior communications specialist, said in an email.
In an email to the Star, Metrolinx said that all three partners on the Ontario Line — the TTC, City of Toronto and Metrolinx — are “exploring options to reduce the duration of shuttle bus service.” Michael Olivier, a member of transit advocacy group South Etobicoke Transit Action Committee, said the Ontario Line is “very much needed,” but he added that it’s unfortunate the tracks aren’t ready for the diverted streetcars.
The 501 Queen streetcar, which stretches from Long Branch Loop in the west to Neville Park Loop in the east, is the TTC’s second most-used streetcar, after the 504 King. In 2021, the transit service reported more than 8 million annual boardings on the 501 Queen.
