Retiring the name A Tribe Called Red for now, Halluci Nation moves into the future with new release.
In 2016, A Tribe Called Red released a concept album titled We Are the Halluci Nation that was inspired by the words of late Santee Dakota activist and artist John Trudell.
“It’s not a rebranding so much as a reflection of the evolution of our group where it is today, and A Tribe Called Red isn’t something that we’ve left behind,” said Thomas. “Instead, we are making a change at a timely moment when we are at a point of closing the last decade-plus cycle of our work and moving into the next. The new album is really a summing up of everything that got us here, paying homage to it and bringing everyone else along.
Struggle isn’t the only expression of that Indigenous identity. Hill was adamant that the next record embrace the fun and celebration that was always a part of the group’s identity. Knowing one another was key in coming up with the new sense of purpose. “With the exception of Rob, we wanted to work with family and people who were close to us,” said Thomas. “Rob had been in touch with us years ago and we had been trying to get together because we instantly saw what he was doing for his community and people as the same as us. Once we finally had a way to get to New Zealand, it was an instant connection to make the track Takarita. Now Rob is family too.
Hill says this was one more level of the additional love that went into this recording. The duo loves to bring the best that they can to their dedicated fans and has comprehensive plans in the works to fully take the next stage in the band’s evolution out into the public eye.Article content
