She read about how the effort was in desperate need of funds to haul the wreck safely above the high-water mark so it could be preserved as a local tourist attraction. Her mother felt there must have been a reason for this shipwreck to come ashore at a location, accessible by vehicle, where it could be easily found and serve as a focal point for an entire community.
At the time, he was in St. John’s to visit his dying father and had brought along a couple of salvaged items from the wreck to show his dad before he passed. “It was amazing to see how happy me being there made her and how happy she was to spread some of her knowledge of shipwrecks,” said Croft.The hand of 89-year-old Joan Scott of St. John’s reaches across her hospital bed to touch one of the pieces of the Cape Ray shipwreck brought to her from southwestern Newfoundland in late February. – Contributed/Kitty Scott“My father was in hospital at the time and it really helped me along,” he said.
“In some ways, she sort of joined the wreck spiritually somehow,” said Kitty. “She was out in that ocean and in Cape Ray, in a way.
