Chicago Police arrested an 18-year-old after the social media widespread “takeover” at North Avenue Beach after hundreds of attendees got dispersed into Old Town Wednesday night.
A beach party that turned into a “large altercation” and spilled over into the streets of the Old Town neighborhood Wednesday night left one person charged with reckless conduct, police said.
The event, “North Avenue Beach Takeover” spread over social media and began about 5 p.m. at the beach. But after the crowd, which swelled to a “large altercation” of about 100 people, was asked to leave by police, they moved west onto North Boulevard, then north on Clark Street to LaSalle Street, according to Kellie Bartoli, a police spokeswoman. The only arrest was Termaine Patterson, 18, who was taken into custody at 11:25 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Clark Street, according to Bartoli.
Patterson who “ignored verbal commands and continued to try to cause bodily harm to several individuals,” was charged with reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, and given a ticket for open alcohol on the public way, according to Bartoli. A witness who said he didn’t want his name in the media said police knew about the party, what started as kids having a good time on a good weather day, and checked their bags, which agitated the crowd.
