A Massachusetts family blames the spicy tortilla chip in the death of their son on Sept. 1, 2023.

Paqui Chips, owned by Amplify Brands, which is

said on its website Thursday that is working to remove the chip from the market “out of an abundance of caution.”Paqui Chips said in its statement that the One Chip Challenge “is intended for adults only, with clear and prominent labeling highlighting the chip is not for children or anyone sensitive to spicy foods or who has food allergies, is pregnant or has underlying health conditions.”

An autopsy on the boy had not been completed as of earlier this week. The family mentioned its suspicions on a, 14. The family said he “passed away unexpectedly at the age of 14 from what we suspect to be complications due to the ‘one chip challenge’ .” Paqui said, “We have seen an increase in teens and other individuals not heeding these warnings. As a result, while the product continues to adhere to food safety standards, out of an abundance of caution, we are actively working with our retailers to remove the product from store shelves.”The One Chip Challenge is a package with one tortilla chip made with very hot peppers. The 2023 product is made with Carolina reaper and Naga viper peppers.
