Mounties say a southern Alberta man who allegedly shot at officers during a lengthy standoff on Friday night has been arrested and charged.
RCMP say they responded to an assault and theft at a residence in the southern Alberta town of Redcliff, located on the northwest edge of Medicine Hat, around 7 p.m. Friday. Police say they found a suspect who “resisted arrest and fired a gun at police,” before retreating into a camper on the property.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
Early Saturday morning, at 1:30 a.m., the suspect surrendered to police. No injuries of either the suspect or Mounties were reported. Redcliff resident Jonathan Andrew Kearney, 32, a tenant of the trailer on the property, is facing 17 charges related to the incident. He was known to police prior to the incident.
He’s charged with discharging a firearm with intent, discharging a firearm while being reckless, resisting arrest and 12 other weapons offences — most related to the unlawful possession of firearms. Additionally, he’s charged with failing to comply with release conditions and breaching a conditional sentence order, which police said is related to a past conviction of theft over $5,000.
Kearney remains in custody after a bail hearing, and his next court date is scheduled for Tuesday in Medicine Hat.
