South San ISD’s then-superintendent, Abelardo Saavedra, at a meeting in 2016. His recommendation to close schools in 2017 was unpopular with voters and he departed the following year. The schools reopened but Saavedra is now a TEA monitor as the board grapples with whether to close them again. The South San Antonio Independent School District board will consider closing four campuses when it meets tonight,A discussion in closed session is scheduled, with possible action to follow.
“When you have that type of space utilization percentage being so low you are basically operating facilities at great expense, and that’s not necessary,” Saavedra said. “It’s very similar to the situation when I was superintendent here and proposed closing two of the schools being proposed to close this year, Athens and Kazen.”
