I could see for a couple of kilometres in every direction and there was nobody coming. It had been 45 minutes since I’d seen another vehicle and as I’d rolled along, I’d pulled over on both sides of the road, thrown u-turns and driven in reverse a couple of hundred metres at a time so often that, looking at the tracks I’d left on the snowy shoulders, you might think a little impairment was involved.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
The lowest areas down in the valley were full of frost. Aspens, willows, roadside grass, all sparkled where the amber light hit it. A flock of redpolls flew up in front of the trucklet, their wings catching the light and, down the road, a half-dozen ravens took off from a scattering of bones some ever-so-scrupulous hunter had dumped in the ditch.
Back on Chimney Rock Rd. I saw a scattering of cattle on a snowy hillside and slowed down to see if they might make a picture. But as I did, I glanced up at the sandstone-capped ridge. At which point the second deer, the one that had gone over the ridge, reappeared between the frosty pines on the hilltop directly above me. Thank you, little whitetail!
There was fresh snow and frost on the limber pines on the ridges and across the valley I could see a long line of cattle lunching on feed that had been laid out for them. Behind them rose the high wall of the Livingstone Range and it was so clear that I could even make out individual trees on the slopes.Article content
So it was no surprise to find myself parked sideways on Snake Tr. yet again. It had been three-quarters of an hour since I’d last shared the road with another vehicle and I was parked, safely but not necessarily legally, in a spot where I could see clearly in every direction.
