ICYMI: On The Road with Mike Drew: Hunt for wild horses bears fruit
We’d been poking around for them in the short grass by stand of pines in the Red Deer River valley west of Sundre for a few minutes and had found a bunch of these yummy little flavour nuggets. We’d both gobbled down a few of them when I casually mentioned that my grandfather had given me a warning about them.
Ozzy is a photographer pal of mine who shoots around the city but hasn’t had much opportunity to check out the surrounding countryside. I’ve teased her a bit about that, you know, my usual rant about there being a whole lot more to southern Alberta than the 3% of the province around Canmore and Banff, and offered to show her some of what she had been missing.
The road passed by them and onto open meadows and broad, grassy valleys before running into forest again. Tall, spindly black spruce and twisty willows marked the muskeg bogs while pines, aspens and poplars stood on the drier ground. There were butterflies everywhere there, landing on the flowers along the banks and then teasingly taking off before I could get any pictures. The clear water reflected the fallen trees that have been there for years bleaching in the sun and teemed with flying bugs of all sorts.Mike Drew/Postmedia
A young wild horse nurses while momma stands west of Sundre, Ab., on Tuesday, July 26, 2022. She’s wearing a collar as part of a study of feral horses in the foothills. We watched and shot pictures as the horses all but ignored us and went on with their day. One mare was wearing a collar, as far as I know a part of a study on grazing and predation that tracks the horses’ movements in relation to the land and animals like grizzlies, wolves and cougars that prey on them.
I found the first one after a couple of minutes and then found some more. And more after that. Soon I was down on the ground picking and eating them.
