Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was so confident a year ago that Republicans would win back control of the U.S. House of Representatives and “fire” Speaker Nancy Pelosi that he promised to bet his house on it: “My personal house. Don’t tell my wife, but I would bet it.”

So on this Election Day, with control of the House on the line, we set out on a 280-mile road trip from the current Speaker’s house in San Francisco to her aspiring replacement’s house in Bakersfield to ask voters what’s at stake – not just for McCarthy’s tract home with the red-tiled roof, but for the country.

Yes, while the rest of America might consider the Golden State boring and blue on Election Day, it’s easy to forget that this year’s epic battle for the speaker’s gavel comes down to two Californians. As the last of the state’s voters cast their ballots, a Bay Area News Group reporter and photographer will travel through Silicon Valley where fears of recession are forcing tech companies to lay off workers, and young people who came of age during the Trump years and George Floyd protests have become a potent political force.
