As species extinctions accelerate, the Coalition defends its record on the environment auspol
The Morrison government has defended Australia's efforts to protect threatened species a day after a global study detailed the prospect of a million species becoming extinct because of humans.identified more than 40 per cent of amphibian species and a third of marine mammals among those facing oblivion, while about 9 per cent of land-based species "have insufficient habitat for long-term survival".
Tony Burke, Labor's environment spokesman, said the ALP was "alarmed" at the global report - formally known as the Intergovernmental Science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services . Sarah Hanson-Young, the Greens' environment spokeswoman, said the planet "is in crisis" and "will be unrecognisable" unless politicians act.
Of that total loss - some 7.5 million hectares - about 93 per cent fell into 12 electorates, nine of them held by Liberal-National candidates, the analysis conducted by the ACF and University of Queensland doctoral student Michelle Ward showed.
