'You are stoking white nationalism bc you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda,' freshman Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar tweeted.
First-term progressive Congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley each fired back at President Donald Trump on Sunday afternoon after he directed an unidentified group of progressive Democrats to"go back" to the"crime infested places" they came from.
Though the president did not name any specific representatives, most agreed that his remarks were likely aimed at members of the so-called"Squad," made up of Omar, Pressley, Tlaib and their fellow Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, all first-term progressive Democrats, and all women of color. While the president claimed that these lawmakers were all foreign-born, all but one was born in America.
"You are stoking white nationalism [because] you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda," she added, concluding with a quote from Robert Kennedy:"America's answer to the intolerant man is diversity, the very diversity which our heritage of religious freedom has inspired."
âAmerica's answer to the intolerant man is diversity, the very diversity which our heritage of religious freedom has inspired.â -RFKTlaib, born to working-class Palestinian immigrants in Detroit, opted to not quote Trump's tweet, but called the president a"complete failure."
