Many pupils across the predominantly black London borough admitted to never being in a swimming pool beforeOLYMPIAN MICHAEL GUNNING hosted an open swimming lesson at the London Fields Lido in Hackney, east London in a bid to help get non-white primary school kids take up swimming this summer.
Statistics reveal 80% of black children don’t or have never been swimming. This is the start of his nationwide campaign and tour to get black children and communities swimming as he is living proof they absolutely can!Gunning, the British-born Jamaican holds national records for 200m butterfly, 200m freestyle, and 400m freestyle, wants to make it his mission to dive into those communities and help change those statistics.
He is part of the Swim United campaign with Speedo, alongside Adam Peaty and Ellie Simmonds, highlighting the growing issue of school children missing out on swimming lessons and swimming opportunities because of their ethnic background.
