Commentary: Olympic sponsors must push back against China’s human rights abuses | Christopher Walsh
France's Perrine Laffont competes in the women's moguls qualifying at Genting Snow Park at the 2022 Winter Olympics, Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022, in Zhangjiakou, China. While the world’s best athletes receive well-deserved laurels at the Winter Olympics in China this month, the ruling Communist Party will be committing atrocities in parts of the country far from the medal podium.
Democratic nations must not allow Beijing to play down its abuses and use the Games to garner international prestige. The Olympics should represent our best, promoting human potential, dignity, fairness and sportsmanship, not the Chinese Communist Party’s aims or values. Given that China has targeted foreign nationals within its borders for political gain, no visiting athlete should feel secure. Free societies should hold Beijing to account.
Still, it’s unfortunate the U.S. hasn’t persuaded other nations to join this effort as a counterweight to attending authoritarians like. He is going to Beijing, even though Russia’s flag, anthem and name are still banned from the Olympics for state-sponsored doping and Russian athletes will compete under a neutral flag.
