Did this slip the mind of team bosses? Four members of the Canadian men’s alpine team were disqualified for showing up at the giant slalom event in new, non-approved ski suits. The coach noted the suits were legal, although officials maintained the racewear didn’t have the small attached disc on the suits that signals the outfits have been approved and meet Olympic standards. Skiers from Bolivia, Morocco and Chinese Taipei were also disqualified.

In that giant slalom event, the charismatic Alberto Tomba of Italy emerged with the gold medal. Known as the Bologna Bullet and La Bomba, the skier had already won seven World Cup races that winter and become a fan favourite. Adding more spice to the story? Tomba’s father had promised him a red Ferrari if he won Olympic gold, and some referred to him as a playboy, citing his popularity with women.

As the demonstration sport of short track speedskating came to a close on Day 13, Canada had won 10 medals — double the number won by any other country in this sport. In another demo sport, the freestyle ballet event, Canada came in fourth in both the men’s and women’s events.Article content What are your memories from the 1988 Winter Olympics, or what stories did your parents share with you?
