Simone Biles, the record-setting Olympic gymnast from Spring, was among 17 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, on Thursday.
WASHINGTON, DC - JULY 7: U.S. President Joe Biden presents the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Simone Biles, Olympic gold medal gymnast and mental health advocate, during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House July 7, 2022 in Washington, DC. President Biden awarded the nation's highest civilian honor to 17 recipients.
“Today, she adds to her medal count,” Biden said. “I don’t know how you’re going to find room,” for another medal. After winning four golds and a bronze in the Rio Olympics in 2016, Biles became an advocate for victims of sexual assault and and outspoken critic of how USA Gymnastics, the FBI and other agencies did not look out for athletes. She acknowledged that she had been among the many victims of Larry Nassar in the sexual abuse scandal that rocked the country.
Rapinoe has played prominent roles in pushing for equal pay for the women’s national team and has spoken out on social justice and LGBTQ issues.
