Olympic gold medalist equestrian Eric Lamaze has been handed a lengthy ban from the sport after being found guilty of doping violations. This is the second time Lamaze has faced a doping suspension, which will see him barred from competing until 2031.

Olympic champion equestrian rider Eric Lamaze has been banned from the sport until 2031 following a second four-year doping suspension imposed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport ( CAS ). The Montreal native, who won individual gold and team silver in jumping at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and individual bronze at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, was banned for evading a doping control test in the Netherlands in 2021.

The CAS ruling stated that Lamaze submitted forged medical documents during the ongoing proceedings, leading to the four-year ineligibility period. This ban will not begin until September 2027, when a previous four-year ban imposed by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) for a previous doping violation expires. Lamaze's career has been marked by both triumphs and controversies. He experienced setbacks due to positive tests for cocaine, which prevented him from competing in the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics. After publicly announcing in 2019 that he had been battling a brain tumor for over a year, Lamaze continued to compete and win show jumping events for several months before officially retiring in 2022. His final competitive appearance for Canada was anchoring the team to victory at a Nations Cup at Calgary's Spruce Meadows in 2021.Following his retirement, Equestrian Canada appointed Lamaze as a technical advisor and head of national jumping teams. However, he was replaced by Ian Millar in February 2023. In addition to the lengthy ban, Lamaze was also fined 15,000 Swiss francs ($16,500 US) and ordered to cover 12,000 Swiss francs ($13,000) in legal costs incurred by the FEI and the arbitration case. This latest doping violation further tarnishes Lamaze's legacy, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the equestrian community in ensuring fair play and upholding ethical standards.
