Oliver has become the most popular baby name in British Columbia for 2024, surpassing Noah. Despite this, neither name comes close to Robert, the most popular name over the past century.
Oliver was the most popular name for babies in British Columbia in 2024, overtaking Noah. However, both still lag behind Robert, the most popular name of the past century. B.C.’s Vital Statistics Agency reports 216 Olivers were born in the past year, the highest yet, followed by Olivia, Liam, Noah, and Theodore. Robert, used 14 times in 2024, remains the top name over the past 100 years with 36,065 instances. David follows closely with 35,364.
The most popular traditional girl’s name since 1925 is Jennifer, used 15,959 times. Statistics show fluctuating name trends; Noah wasn’t registered in B.C. until 1973. While Susan and Patricia were popular in the past, none were born in B.C. in 2024. Diversity has increased; although Noah was the only name used over 200 times in 2024, over 30 names surpassed that mark in 1984 when Michael was the most popular with 813 instances. As of Dec. 16, 38,103 babies were registered as born in B.C. in 2024
