Oldest New York City school to tweak “Dutchman” mascot, motto after hefty inclusivity report
A centuries-old New York school for boys will update its storied mascot and motto after issuing a hefty sensitivity and inclusion report, thereported Monday.
The report concerning the Collegiate School, the oldest private school in New York with a founding date of 1628, required a 17-person committee to probe its “history and symbols” over a period of roughly three years, according to theThe final result is a 407-page report, completed last year after several rounds of design, testing, and feedback. Among the recommended changes are replacing the old school motto, “Unless God, then in vain,” with the Latin for “Wisdom, Community, Kindness.
