From inappropriate behaviour to over-enthusiasm, six performers talk about the good, bad and ugly of interactive shows.

Gay, a TV, theatre and cabaret star, says that Calamity Jane was"very different to most people's experience of audience interaction, where somebody has been got up by a magician or a cabaret performer and made … the butt of the joke for everybody else's benefit".

The Helpmann Award-winning production developed its level of audience participation"through trial and error", over several seasons, and used stagecraft to indicate when the audience were welcome to participate."There's a bit where I say 'This amazing actress is coming', and one night somebody in the audience just yelled out 'Virginia Gay!'," the actor recalls.

The material itself, a queer-coded love story of a genderbending gunslinger, set in America's 'Wild West', was also vulnerable to cultural insensitivity — such as when an outspoken audience member blamed the"Indians" for an unexplained noise in the theatre.
