Oil itself not evil. It is a benign, amoral substance

, I was struck by an encounter with a student at Western University. After I’d spoken for 20 minutes about why oil fascinated me, she tentatively raised her hand. She was genuinely curious and engaged in my talk, yet she was still surprised: She’d never seen anyone so passionate about something that was, well, so gross. I laughed and told her that I appreciated her honesty. Admittedly, I was caught a little wrong-footed, not quite sure how best to respond.

Many people, even those from the region, know astonishingly little about the Lambton County oil boom. When I polled a class of 30 students at Western to ask who’d heard of this history, none of them raised their hands. Yet there’s a lecture hall at Western named after Imperial Oil, and We live in an age of pronounced good and evil; nowhere is this more prevalent than in ecological discourse. In the late 19th century, philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche committed his energies to unravelling the socio-political dependence on Christian morality. Among other things, that morality was characterized by a powerful divide between Good and Evil, two metaphysical concepts which Nietzsche wanted to dismantle.

Literally speaking, petroleum is toxic; in technical terms, this means simply that it has the capacity to harm living things. For human beings, prolonged exposure to petroleum increases the risk of a host of health issues including anemia, lymph node atrophy, immune system suppression and increased risk of certain cancers. You don’t want to ingest it. You don’t want your kids near it. You don’t want to smell or see it.
