Shohei Ohtani has become the first player in MLB history to record a 50-home run, 50-stolen base season after smashing two home runs and stealing two bases against the Miami Marlins on Thursday.
He homered in the sixth and seventh innings, launching two-run shots in both in a blowout against Miami.
The 30-year-old became just the sixth player to ever record a 40-home run, 40-steal season after hitting a walk-off grand-slam against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 23. The 40/40 club’s charter member was Jose Canseco in 1988, followed by Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano, and Ronald Acuña Jr., who joined last year.
With his 50th home run, the Japanese slugger has also broken the Dodgers’ franchise record for most homers in a single season, a mark held by Shawn Green since 2001. The two-way superstar has assumed full-time designated hitter duties this year after undergoing surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow last September.
In his first season with the Dodgers, Ohtani entered action on Thursday slashing .287/.372/.611 with 119 runs scored and 110 RBI as he continues to strengthen his case down the stretch for the NL's Most Valuable Player.
