The latest Ohio State player to wear its Block O (No. 0) jersey honoring Bill Willis is a former walk-on who carved out a role as a wide receiver.
It may have taken some time, but Johnson finally earned that offer ahead of last season, which would eventually be a breakout season for him as he made signature plays in multiple games. With the absence of Jaxon Smith-Njigba, due to a hamstring injury suffered against Notre Dame, a handful of plays originally designed for the now-Seattle Seahawk went to Johnson.
The first was a 24-yard score in the third quarter in a top-five, prime-time matchup against Notre Dame to open the season. It gave OSU the lead for good in a 21-10 win. “It’s definitely crazy,” Johnson said of the game. “I had a decent feel for how Coach was gonna use me. I was extremely grateful and was able to see that full circle. Remove myself from the present and really be grate for the fact that I started as a walk-on going through all the hardships. I was now in a moment where I was going to be featured or used. It was gonna be something I could maximize in having an impact or a role.
