If approved – which is likely -- the Hopewell parks will be the first World Heritage site in Ohio, and only the 25th in the United States. The collection of eight sites in Ross, Licking and Warren counties, is dotted with mounds and sophisticated geometric structures built from the earth as many as 2,000 years ago.

Aultman said it’s unclear when the Octagon site would be open to the public more regularly. Discovered inside many of these burial mounds: the ancient works of sophisticated craftsmen, including effigy pipes, jewelry and pottery made of materials brought from great distances, including mica, obsidian, copper and silver. Eastern Shawnee Chief Wallace, who will also travel to Saudi Arabia next week, has said she hopes the nomination prompts a rethinking of Native Americans in Ohio and across the country.

According to UNESCO guidelines, World Heritage sites must have “outstanding universal value” and meet at least one of 10 criteria for inclusion. The Hopewell sites meet at least two, according to an independent assessment from the Paris-based International Council on Monuments and Sites. They “represent a masterpiece of human creative genius” and they “bear exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition.
