Three Ohio police officers are facing criminal charges stemming from alleged misconduct last year at Black Lives Matter protests over the killing of George Floyd, officials say. The officers' attorney said they are being 'used as scapegoats' by the city.

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd's death at the hands of then-officer Derek Chauvin sparked a wave of protests across the world, but did the historic movement change policing in America?Three Ohio police officers are facing criminal charges stemming from alleged misconduct last year at Black Lives Matter protests over the killing of George Floyd, officials said on Wednesday.

Charges were filed against Sgt. Traci M. Shaw, Sgt. Holly Kanode and Officer Phillip Walls, Garber said. Kanode claimed that she assisted in the arrest of a female protester on May 30, 2020, after the demonstrator grabbed ahold of another officer's equipment and tried to jerk him to the ground. A review of Kanode's own body camera video contradicted the sergeant's statement, according to Wozniak's affidavit. In addition to the charge of dereliction of duty, Kanode is charged with the falsification of a report.

Columbus Public Safety Director Ned Pettus Jr. added,"This is important, necessary work. Answers and accountability are what the people of Columbus demand and deserve."
