Dozens of Ohio elected officials and organization leaders descended on the White House Wednesday to tout their local windfalls from recent federal legislation.
They met with Biden administration officials including former U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge of Warrensville Heights, who currently serves as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Senior Advisor Keisha Lance Bottoms and White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Director Julie Chavez Rodriguez as part of ato showcase how President Joe Biden’s policies benefit communities around the nation.
He noted that Biden will be in the Columbus area on Friday to attend the groundbreaking on a new Intel computer chip factory subsidized by the CHIPS Act, and predicted the company’s commitment to spend up to $100 billion in Ohio “will go a long way to make sure the next generation of builders come from our cities in Ohio.”
Akron Mayor Daniel Horrigan said his city used a big share of the $145 million it got from the bill to replace the city’s lead pipes, which he hopes will be gone in the next three or four years. He said the city also used its money to establish a grant program for city residents to rehabilitate their homes, help small businesses grow, and subsidize youth employment, mental health and mentorship programs.
He said Lorain is using its money to hire police officers to fight crime and to establish prison re-entry job training and housing programs for residents to make sure they don’t return to prison. The city is also working with local schools to establish broadband internet connections to all the city’s households.
“We’ve done an awful lot of things,” said Fudge. “It’s just a matter of getting the word out and telling people what we’ve done.”
