Rep. Mike Turner, R-Dayton, said he supports banning sales of military-style firearms, magazine limits and "red-flag" legislation.
The Republican congressman who represents Dayton is calling for several gun control measures after nine were killed in a mass shooting there Sunday.
Turner has an"A" rating from the National Rifle Association and last year earned the organization's support for opposing a ban on semi-automatic firearms, commonly called"assault weapons." Around 1 a.m. Sunday, a shooter fired at least 41 rounds in 30 seconds before police took him down entering Ned Peppers Bar in the city's Oregon District. Nine people were killed and 27 were injured. The shooter, wearing body armor, used a modified AR-15 style .223 caliber firearm and legal, 100-round magazines. "I believe these are necessary steps forward in protecting our country and a testament to American values, which include protecting human life," Turner said.
