Dry, blustery weather across California on Friday and Saturday is expected to raise the risk for wildfires in some parts of the state.

a wind advisory for the Sacramento Valley through 6 p.m. Friday and for the northern Sierra and foothills through 7 a.m. Saturday. Sustained winds of 15 to 30 mph are forecast in the valley with isolated gusts up to 40 mph, while much stronger winds are expected in the Sierra with wind speeds up to 70 mph on ridgetops. The weather service warned of difficult driving conditions, downed trees and branches, power outages and dangerous outdoor recreation impacts.

These northeasterly winds are known for fanning wildfire flames and the state has seen some of its most destructive fires in offshore wind events, but the risk in Northern California is low this month due to recent soaking rains. It's a different story in Southern California, which hasn't seen as much precipitation. In Los Angeles, forecasters are warning of critical fire conditions Friday night through Saturday. A fire weather watch is in effect for Los Angeles and Ventura counties 1 a.
