Incident shows the importance of readily available automated external defibrillators, says Comox Fire Rescue

An incident where an off-duty paramedic and staff at the Comox Community Centre saved a gym user’s last week shows the importance of publicly available automated external defibrillators, says the Comox fire chief.

The person was taken to hospital for urgent care and the quick actions likely saved a life, said Comox Fire Chief Gord Schreiner. Sudden cardiac arrest can strike at any time, and fewer than 10% of victims typically survive, according to a statement from Comox Fire Rescue. It said studies show 30% to 50% would likely survive if CPR and AEDs were used within five minutes of collapse.
