Soup kitchen must hire private guards & sanitation worker to patrol neighboring industrial park properties
Brother Benno’s, the nonprofit soup kitchen that feeds hundreds of Oceanside’s homeless and working poor, has hired private security guards and a sanitation worker to patrol the surrounding industrial park.
“It’s definitely way out of the scope of what we can afford,” said Ben Meyer, essential services manager for Brother Benno’s. The new private service helps somewhat, he said. But security guards can’t force someone to leave a property. They can only call police, who generally are slow to respond to a low-priority offense such as trespassing.
Marco Gonzalez, an attorney and longtime Brother Benno’s volunteer, said the city and not Benno’s should be responsible for the industrial park’s security.Oceanside police recommended earlier this year that Brother Benno’s stop issuing sack lunches, which are available in the mornings for people to take away. Police said the take-out meals encouraged people to loiter around the center, including people banned from the center for causing trouble.
