Clint Crabtree, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279, said the City of Ottawa maintained it did not have the budget to keep the garage attendants on staff.OC Transpo is projecting a $39-million budget deficit this year largely because the transit service has recovered just 65-70 per cent of its pre-pandemic ridership.

“The buses that the public use are treated like garbage cans and toilets,” Racine wrote in his letter. “The garage attendants clean these buses every day and remove urine, feces, needles, garbage, vandalism and more so that the public, every day, have safe, clean buses to commute to work, go to appointments, and get groceries, et cetera.”Article content

Racine suggested the city reduce the size of its OC Transpo management staff in favour of retaining more front-line workers.
