The fatal incident at Westbank and QuadReal's Oakridge Park construction site this week is undoubtedly tragic, but perhaps more alarming is that the incident is at least the fifth major incident at a major Metro Vancouver construction site in the past three months — although it was the only one that resulted in a death.

The second incident occurred less than a week later, on November 30, at the construction site of Vue by Amacon, located at 638 Whiting Way in Coquitlam, near the border of Burnaby. The incident involved a shoring wall within the excavated site collapsing, which was captured in aThe third incident occurred on January 26, at the construction site for Gilmore Place by Onni Group, also in Burnaby.

Following the two crane collapses in Burnaby and Surrey in January, the union that represents BC crane operators released asaying that those two incidents should serve as a "wakeup call" for the industry and government, noting that "more needs to be done." The union said it wants to see improvements related to certification and minimum levels of training introduced.
