During an argument about finances, the suspect allegedly used a belt to choke the woman, causing her to go in and out of consciousness multiple times.
OAKLAND — A 35-year-old Oakland man has been charged with attempted murder, torture, domestic violence, and other crimes in connection with an extensive attack on his romantic partner that ended when the women leapt from their third-story apartment, falling 30 feet to the sidewalk below, according to court records.
Stoney Rodriguez was also charged with false imprisonment, making criminal threats, and multiple counts of illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition as a felon, court records show. He is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. Police say that on May 1, Rodriguez and his girlfriend argued about finances in their MacArthur Boulevard apartment near Lake Merritt. Rodriguez allegedly beat the woman with a liquor bottle and used a belt to strangle her multiple times, causing her to fall in and out of consciousness. He reportedly told her not to leave and that “it would be all over” if she did, police said in court records..
Police described Rodriguez as a suspected Oakland gang member with multiple convictions, including receiving stolen property and gun possession, making it illegal for him to possess guns. They allege that an AR-15-style rifle and ammunition were found in Rodriguez’s possession during his arrest, and that he was found hiding under a staircase at the apartment complex where the attack occurred.
Rodriguez pleaded not guilty at his May 11 arraignment, and is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing on Thursday. There, a judge will review the evidence against him and decide if there’s enough to file charges.
