Cole Irvin was the A’s second starter in as many games to give up a first-inning home run.

PHILADELPHIA — A’s starter Cole Irvin felt the power of a revamped Phillies lineup in his return to Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon, while the A’s offense failed to bring enough force.

The former Phillies pitcher allowed three home runs against his old club as Oakland fell 4-2 at Citizens Bank Park for its second straight loss to open the season. Right-hander Kyle Gibson stifled A’s hitters for Philadelphia, tossing seven shutout innings. Irvin, who pitched for the Phillies in 2019 and 2020 before he was traded to Oakland ahead of last season, allowed four earned runs on seven hits in 5 ⅓ innings pitched. The early-game struggles that hurt Frankie Montas on Opening Day crept up again with Irvin on the mound.

A day after free-agent signee Kyle Schwarber led the season off with a long ball, fellow Phillies newcomer Nick Castellanos launched a 426-foot, two-run home run into left-center in the bottom of the first inning to quickly put the A’s down 2-0. Philadelphia jumped on Irvin again in the sixth as his former teammates Rhys Hoskins and Jean Segura hit back-to-back solo home runs to left field. The left-hander retired one more batter before being removed.
