The 10-year-old girl who was a stabbed to death in East Oakland last week lived in a house with history of domestic violence, court records show.
OAKLAND — The 10-year-old girl who allegedly was stabbed to death by her mother at their East Oakland home last week had long lived in a household with a history of domestic violence, according to court records and testimony from family and neighbors.
The killing left family and neighbors in shock, many of them wondering about the mother’s motives. Rosa’s next-door neighbors and family said she recently had been acting paranoid, overly protective of Sophia and was stressed about moving. But none of them expected such sudden violence. On Dec. 8, 2019, at about 1:38 a.m. Lorenzo dragged Orozco out of their bedroom by the neck and into the kitchen, according to court records. While in the kitchen, Lorenzo punched her multiple times and then placed both of his hands around her neck in an apparent attempt to choke her, police said. Sophia, then six years old, witnessed it.
As part of the deal, Lorenzo was ordered to stay away from the mother and daughter’s residence on Bancroft Avenue and instructed to take 52 weeks of a domestic violence course. He completed the course in April 2021 and remains on probation for the battery charge until June 22, 2024. The Alameda County Superior Court said details on the protective order are confidential.
Before her sister started dating Lorenzo, Nancy described Rosa as outgoing, smart and “perfectly normal,” but all of it changed “when she met this guy.” Orozco noticed Lorenzo’s violent behavior toward her sister when Sophia was just a year old. She has always described the couple’s relationship as toxic and leading to Rosa’s deteriorating mental health and paranoia.
Nancy said “the neighbors” have always known about their fraught relationship. She said the “shouting and the yelling was every day” and that neighbors “always complained about the screaming.”
