A year after the BC province issued housing targets, Oak Bay is facing criticism for not meeting its goals. The municipality, however, argues that the province's approach is more political maneuvering than a genuine attempt to solve the housing crisis. Mayor Murdoch points out that they had previously requested assistance from the province when the targets were first announced, but their pleas were ignored.
A year after lighting a fire under municipalities to build more, Oak Bay is being singled out, but the municipality says unfairly so.On Wednesday, the province released data on how communities are doing in their first year.
Murdoch says that when the housing orders came out more than a year ago, they knew they wouldn’t have enough in the pipeline to make the target in the first year because the province’s metrics measure completion, not housing starts.“We’re just saying we know we’re going to have a problem out front, so come help us now,” the mayor told CHEK News in September 2023.“We never did hear back from the province on that request,” he said.
