BUFFALO — Ryan O’Reilly had some clarity when he peered into the future on Tuesday morning.
The line produced three goals and nine points in the first seven minutes, 14 seconds, propelling the Leafs to a 6-3 victory.O’Reilly’s first two goals as a Leaf after he was acquired from the St. Louis Blues on Friday, along with Noel Acciari, came 37 seconds apart and gave Toronto a 2-0 lead before Tavares scored.
And the Leafs weren’t done. Michael Bunting, on Toronto’s 10th shot on goal, scored on the short side on Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen at 12:09 to increase the visitors’ lead to 4-0. That brought an end to Luukkonen’s night, with Craig Anderson coming on in relief. At that point, the Sabres had just two shots on Ilya Samsonov.
The Sabres were unable to fully recover — though they scored all three of their goals in the third period — and the Leafs tucked away the flat effort in Chicago on Sunday that resulted in a loss.Article content Tavares, who finished with four points, has played the wing, but never with regularity in the NHL. He was on the wing on a line for Canada with Steven Stamkos and Ryan Getzlaf during the 2016 World Cup, and also with Bern in the Swiss League during the lockout in the 2012-13 season.
