Cougars hold off defending champion Haddon Township
The Schalick girls tennis team poses with its trophy after defeating Haddon Township in the South Jersey, Group 1 final.Grace O’Neill was so emotionally drained from tennis that she seriously considered giving up the sport and switching to cheerleading for her senior year.O’Neill earned a key point at second singles to put Schalick ahead for good, and the second-seeded Cougars went on to defeat top-seeded Haddon Township 4-1 in the South Jersey, Group 1 final in Westmont.
Schalick has been a perennial contender ever since the first title, but could not add a second one even when Molly Jespersen, the best player in program history, was leading the team at first singles from 2018-2021. The Cougars came close in her senior season but lost 3-2 to Gateway in the final as the Gators rallied from a big deficit at third singles to win the match.
“But she really did it herself,” he said. “It’s a maturity thing. I said to her today, ‘Finally,’ and she said, ‘Tell me about it.’ Schalick’s Rachel Goranson and Miya Watkins secured the victory, outlasting Brielle Erickson and Morgan O’Kane 7-5, 6-3. The Cougars were down 2-5 and 0-30 in the first set before storming back.
To go from a novice to playing a major role in the second sectional title in program history has been quite a ride for Goranson. The question now is whether the Cougars have two more ugly wins in them to add their first state championship. Romano doesn’t know what to expect from their next opponent.
