After just missing in Bing Crosby, Doug O'Neill charge puts field away and then holds on in the stretch

After finishing second to The Chosen Vron in the Grade I Bing Crosby Stakes on July 29 — which was the first of six win-and-you’re-in automatic qualifiers for the Breeders’ Cup during Del Mar’s summer meeting — Anarchist won Saturday’s Grade II Pat O’Brien Stakes to earn a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita during the first weekend in November.

“Anarchist doesn’t have a big finishing stretch run, but he grinds it out. We were hoping that if he was leading turning for home, we’d have a big chance and it worked out perfectly. Ramon saved a lot of energy and got him in good position.” Pastor T, a 2-year-old son of Iron Mischief, collapsed with a broken left front leg near the finish line at the end of his workout and was euthanized. Trained by Bob Baffert, Pastor T won his debut at Del Mar on Aug. 12 under Juan Hernandez and was pointed toward the Del Mar Futurity. Pastor T was a $250,000 purchase as a yearling. The rider was not hurt.

But after winning the Grade III Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita in March of 2022, Baffert gave Eda a year away from racing because “you could tell she wasn’t enjoying her work.”
