'It's just not an option for everyone to drive in New York,' Sarah Feinberg, interim president of New York City Transit, told CNBC.

"I keep getting the question, how are we going to maintain 6 feet of distance on the New York City subway system? The answer is that's not going to be possible," she said, adding that is "barely possible" with the current low levels of ridership due to the pandemic., bringing with it steep declines in fare revenues. Feinberg said she worries about the way in which transit ridership will recover in other cities, but believes it will eventually happen in New York City.

"It's just not an option for everyone to drive in New York," said Feinberg, former administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration. "So people are going to have to come back to the system because that's who we are. It's the lifeblood of the city for a reason. ... It will take a while but I do believe the ridership will come back."
