New York City schools were originally meant to open on April 29, but the mayor said 'the risk did not outweigh the reward.'
NEW YORK, NY - MARCH 30: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio speaks to the press as the USNS Comfort arrives at Pier 90 on March 30, 2020 in New York City. The Comfort, a naval hospital ship, is equipped to take in patients within 24 hours but will not be treating patients with COVID-19. The ship's 1,000 beds and 12 operation rooms will help ease the pressure on New York hospitals, many of which are now overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients.
"After very careful consideration, I announce today that New York City public schools will remain closed for the remainder of this school year. There is nothing easy about this decision," de Blasio said during a coronavirus press briefing. The mayor originally had schools set to open up on April 20, after spring break. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo then said schools would be remained closed until April 29. The New York City school year typically ends at the end of June. Schools will continue to educate children through distance learning, which de Blasio said has been successful thus far. This is a public health decision â and not an easy one. But it's the right one.
"The risk did not outweigh the reward...There was not a clear reason of what we would gain to help our kids, but the challenges and the problems were very, very clear," de Blasio said.
