Police in New Westminster are seeking witnesses after a senior citizen was found injured near the Royal City Centre, with investigators looking to determine the cause of the fall and asking anyone with information to contact the department.
Police officers in New Westminster are urgently seeking witnesses after an elderly woman was found injured near the intersection of 6th Street and 6th Avenue on September 8th.
Injured Woman Found Near Royal City Centre
New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) reported that, just before 3 p.m., a patrol officer was flagged down following a call for an injured person on the ground close to the Royal City Centre. When officers arrived, they discovered a woman in her late seventies lying on the street with a severe leg injury. A senior citizen was quickly attended to, stabilized and transported to a local hospital, where she received treatment for her injuries.
The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, prompting investigators to launch an inquiry into the cause of the woman's injury. Sgt. Andrew Leaver addressed the community in a statement released on Friday, emphasizing that his department is actively searching for witnesses or anyone who may have interacted with the senior citizen before first responders arrived.
"We know there may have been several people in the area who either witnessed what happened or stopped to help before first responders arrived," Leaver said. "We are asking those individuals to contact police, as even small details may help us understand exactly what occurred. " He urged anyone with observations, whether they were in the immediate vicinity or simply passersby who might have noticed unusual activity, to contact NWPD.
The department is particularly interested in hearing from anyone who saw the sequence of events leading up to the woman's fall, as well as from individuals who may have offered assistance to the victim. By piecing together a comprehensive picture of the incident, investigators hope to determine whether the injury was accidental, the result of foul play, or inadvertently caused by another factor such as a structural fault or environmental hazard.
NWPD Seeks Witnesses and Safety Tips
Meanwhile, the NWPD has issued a public safety bulletin reminding residents and visitors that falls involving elderly individuals can happen quickly and often without obvious warning. The police department advises people to maintain situational awareness in crowded areas, especially during the evening when traffic and pedestrian flows increase, and to report any suspicious or hazardous conditions promptly.
The department also encourages the local community to support one another, particularly older citizens, by checking in on them during times of high activity near malls or transit hubs. A dedicated hotline number, 604-525-5411, has been set up for tips or statements, and officers are prepared to review any accounts that may shed light on how the senior woman suffered her injury.
The investigation remains open and any new information received in the coming days could be key to identifying the root cause and ensuring similar incidents are prevented in the future.
