In the past month, there were only two reports of discarded needles
If the number of discarded syringes discovered downtown is any indicator of the severity of Sault Ste. Marie's opioid problem, efforts by our law enforcement and private security agencies might finally be making a difference.
N1 Solutions Inc., retained by the city in mid-March to conduct overnight patrols of the city core, advises that reports of found needles are now down to almost nothing. "This past month, there's only been two," N1's Sonny Spina told a Wednesday-night meeting of the Downtown Association. One month earlier, Spina told the same business group that only eight needles had been recovered during two incidents. That's a sharp plunge from the 300 needles picked up by N1 security patrols during the first month and a half of their current six-month city-sponsored pilot project.Spina said reports from N1's nightly patrols are communicated almost immediately to Tom Vair, the city's deputy chief administrative officer in charge of community development and enterprise services.
"When I say real time, I mean literally as the security person is typing the report, once it's done, it goes directly to our team and him as well."
