Nuit Blanche Toronto Returns Saturday for 20th Anniversary with 70 Projects and Road Closures
Nuit Blanche Toronto, 20Th Anniversary, Tomorrow's Memories

Nuit Blanche returns to Toronto Saturday for its 20th anniversary, featuring more than 70 projects under the theme Tomorrow's Memories, with extended TTC service and downtown road closures beginning at noon on Oct. 3.

Nuit Blanche returns to Toronto on Saturday, marking 20 years the city has hosted the free all-night arts showcase. The event runs from 7 p.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Sunday, with more than 70 projects by local, national and international artists, institutions and community partners.

Nuit Blanche Theme and City Experience

This year's theme is Tomorrow's Memories. Jeanne Holmes, manager of city cultural events programming with the City of Toronto, told CP24 on Friday that the idea behind the theme is that we are making memories that people will have in the future. Holmes said the ideas, energy and enthusiasm of the artists who take over the city transform spaces that people would normally just walk right by into art galleries or museum-like spaces.

She said this has really embedded itself into the city's memory. She added that this revisioning, re-centring of what public art means to a city like Toronto will push Nuit Blanche right through to the next decade. Holmes also said there is no wrong way to experience the event. She suggested starting in your own neighbourhood, such as visiting the installation near the Aga Khan, picking up a map and navigating through the city.

She said people can also start at Nathan Phillips Square and engage with projects at City Hall and the square. Holmes highlighted a floor-by-floor takeover of Old City Hall as amazing. The projects will be scattered across Toronto's downtown core and waterfront, as well as in neighbouring municipalities including Etobicoke and North York. The TTC subway Lines 1 and 2 will remain open through to their 8 a.m. opening hours on Sunday morning.

Nuit Blanche Road Closures and Transit

This makes it easy for patrons to take in as many projects as they can. Several road closures will be in place to accommodate the event, beginning at 12 p.m. on Oct. 3. Closures will remain in place until noon on Oct. 4. Queen Street West will be closed between Bay Street and University Avenue.

Bay Street will be closed between Hagerman Street and Richmond Street West. Elizabeth Street will be closed between Grenville Street and Hagerman Street. Hagerman Street will be closed between Elizabeth Street and Bay Street. Additional closures include Albert Street between James Street and Bay Street.

Local traffic will be permitted on York Street between Richmond Street West and Queen Street West. Local traffic will also be allowed on Bay Street between Dundas Street West and Foster Place, and on all of Foster Place. Toronto police said some TTC routes will be diverting because of the road closures. Motorists should expect delays downtown.
