Poland spent over a decade warning the world about Russia’s capacity to weaponize energy exports and was summarily ignored. Neighbouring countries,Advertisement 3Now these countries urgently need alternative energy suppliers and are specifically looking for liquefied natural gas — a resource which Canada has in abundance.
Canada could have, and should have, saved the day. Canadians could have, and should have, provided Europe with massive quantities of LNG, shielding allies from Russian extortion while simultaneously generating massive profits.
But it’s not too late to change course. Investing in gas infrastructure today won’t increase our production fast enough to immediately alleviate the current European energy crisis or stop Russia’s invasion. However, Europe’s energy crisis is expected to persist for the medium term and Russia shows no signs of abandoning its aggressive expansionism.
Even if it takes a few years, becoming a gas superpower would be an economic, political and environmental victory.
