Violent offenders should be prevented from statutory release

after his arrest Wednesday night. The case highlights systemic failures in our criminal justice system, which puts community safety at risk by treating too many violent offenders with kid gloves.Sign up to receive the daily top stories from the National Post, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. His most recent transgressions included a July 2017 incident in which he barged into his ex-girlfriend’s home, punched a hole in the door of the bathroom, where his children were hiding, and damaged a vehicle. A few days later, he walked into a store and threatened to murder the shopkeeper. Later that year, he coerced someone into committing a robbery by hitting him over the head with a firearm and stomping on him.

Sanderson was convicted of three counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of mischief, along with assault, assaulting a police officer, uttering threats to cause harm, uttering threats to destroy property and robbery. For this, he was banned from owning weapons and sent to prison for less than 4½ years — an extremely lenient sentence given the crimes he was convicted of, many of which allow for a maximum penalty far above what he received in total.

The biggest problem with statutory release is that it takes the decision out of the hands of the Parole Board, which is able to consider the risks an offender poses. Yet in this case, Sanderson violated the conditions of his release by moving in with his ex-girlfriend, with whom he had a history of domestic violence, and lying about it to his parole officer. It was then up to the board to decide whether Sanderson should get a second chance.
