NP View: Justin Trudeau\u0027s WE testimony offered theatre, not answers

If there was anything at all to the hearings, it was a revealing look at accountability in our government. First, to state the obvious, the committee was only able to invite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the first place because the Liberals were held to a minority after last fall’s vote. Though the Liberals, as government, chair the committee, they do not make up the majority of its members. As frustrating as the testimony was to watch, we should not forgot that it was in itself significant.

And second, the issue of accountability within the government. The WE scandal is not the most important issue facing this nation, but it is a window into how this government, tasked with handling the more important ones, performs. The news isn’t good. Asked repeatedly how long he’d keep a cabinet minister who’d breached ethics rules three times, as he seemingly has , the prime minister had no satisfying answer.

Canadians will get those answers, in time. Lacking a majority, the Liberals won’t be able to stop it. That will flesh out our understanding of the details of this latest flub by the government. But it will not tell Canadians much more about the prime minister and his party than they already know. He can’t help himself, and his party won’t hold him to account. That, it seems, will be left to the voters.
