The Novavax vaccine has seen less fanfare as it moves through the regulatory process. But it could play an important role in the pandemic.
The two-dose Novavax contains the protein spike of the virus that causes COVID-19 and a Matrix-M adjuvant to boost the immune system's response. Protein-based vaccines are already widely used for other ailments, including hepatitis B and whooping cough.
The FDA gave emergency use authorization to Novavax, the fourth inoculation against COVID-19, as public health officials say the protein-based shots could play a key role as the pandemic lingers. Above, a health worker prepares a Novavax dose as the Dutch Health Service Organization begins its program on March 21, 2022, in The Hague, Netherlands.
