The 32-year-old Serbian won the Australian Open for a record-extending eighth time Sunday, defeating No. 5 seed Dominic Thiem in dramatic fashion, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was Grand Slam title No. 17 for the No. 2 seed Djokovic, who trails only Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer on the men's singles majors list.
Djokovic appeared to unravel starting late in the second set vs. the No. 5-seeded Thiem. Djokovic was penalized with a fault on break point in the ninth game for exceeding the 25-second service clock after he was previously warned.
