Five women killed by male partners in less than three months in Nova Scotia sparks calls for increased funding and support for victims and prevention programs.

Five women were killed by male partners in Nova Scotia in less than three months, leading to calls for increased support. The RCMP revealed that a 60-year-old woman was found dead alongside her 75-year-old husband on Sunday at their home in Mahone Bay. The medical examiner determined the woman was killed by her husband, who then took his own life.

This incident follows a New Year's Eve double homicide in Halifax where 40-year-old Cora-Lee Smith and her 73-year-old father, Bradford Downey, were shot by Smith's 39-year-old boyfriend, Matthew Costain, who later died by suicide. Since October 18, there have been five murder-suicides involving couples in Nova Scotia, with each case involving a man killing his female partner before suicide. The province declared intimate partner violence an epidemic in September, but groups providing aid and shelter for women and families are urging the government to allocate more resources. Adsum for Women and Children, a housing group, has called for core funding for programs that protect and house women and children, as well as for agencies offering treatment for male perpetrators. Attorney General Becky Druhan acknowledged the urgency of the issue and announced an additional $7.1 million in annual core funding for transition houses and women's centers, bringing their total annual budget to $16.9 million. She also emphasized the importance of public awareness and urged individuals to call 211 or visit nsdomesticviolence.ca for help
